Cabling Survey Technician (One-Day Freelance Assignment)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced low-voltage/cabling technician to perform a
one-day on-site cabling survey
at a client location. The technician will assess the current network/IT cabling infrastructure, identify upgrade or installation requirements, and provide detailed documentation, photos, and recommendations.

Requirements

  • Prior experience with structured cabling, low-voltage, or network infrastructure surveys
  • Ability to identify cable paths, access points, termination points, racks, conduits, and ceiling/wall conditions
  • Ability to take clear photos and notes for reporting purposes
  • Strong communication and professionalism at customer site
  • Must have a smartphone or tablet for documentation
  • Must follow all site safety rules
  • Ability to work independently and provide accurate details

Equipment to Bring

  • Ladder (6–8 ft, if ceiling access required)
  • Flashlight
  • PPE (safety shoes, vest, gloves, eye protection)
  • Basic hand tools (screwdriver set, punch-down tools if needed)
  • Camera-enabled mobile device
  • Labeling materials (optional)

Pre-Site Requirements

  • Confirm appointment with onsite contact
  • Review project briefing and required survey checklist
  • Bring all required tools and PPE
  • Ensure ability to upload photos and notes same day

On-Site Tasks

  1. Meet with onsite contact and understand layout/access limitations

  2. Survey the entire area for:

  3. Existing network/data cabling

  4. Switch rooms, patch panels, racks
  5. Cable routes (ceiling, floor, conduits)
  6. Potential obstructions or installation challenges

  7. Existing equipment conditions

  8. Take detailed photos of all relevant areas

  9. Record measurements:

  10. Cable distances/length estimates

  11. Ceiling heights

  12. Rack/room dimensions

  13. Identify requirements for new drops, repairs, or replacements

  14. Validate cable labeling status and patch panel conditions
  15. Document any special materials required (conduits, plenums, pathways, etc.)
  16. Provide onsite summary to project manager if needed

Post-Site Requirements

  • Submit a comprehensive survey report including:
  • Photos
  • Notes and measurements
  • Recommended cabling plan or installation requirements
  • Any risks or special tools/equipment needed
  • Upload all documentation within
    24 hours
  • Be available for clarification if needed
